Unique Work
Material: agave fiber
@escobaryrosas
Rosana Escobar’s Spine series explores the sculptural and aesthetic qualities of the raw fique fiber, an agave plant native to Colombia, which has been widely used to produce the coffee bags exported from Colombia to the rest of the world. Reclaiming the richness and potential of this material through field-rooted research and craft investigations of the raw fiber, Escobar explores the potential for new applications.
In so doing, her work reimagines our contemporary relationship to materials while honoring the voices and expertise of rural and artisanal communities in Colombia—as well as ancestral knowledge passed down over generations. Through boundary-pushing techniques and a deep respect for social and environmental heritage, Escobar’s lyrical work invites observers to see fibers as both storyteller and collaborator. Indigo Spine’s fiber hangs freely from 17 vertical yarns that form a central belt, allowing the piece to rotate and perform.
