For King Houndekpinkou, “the Overview Effect” emerges through the elemental act of working with clay in the studio. Drawn from the ground beneath our feet, clay transcends borders, carrying the histories of cultures and generations of makers while reminding us of our shared planetary belonging. The potter’s wheel, in its perpetual rotation, becomes a metaphor for life on our spinning blue planet and the
continual search for balance.

King’s vessels are a meditation on equilibrium—between fragility and resilience, inherited traditions and cultural exchange. Incorporating clays gathered across Benin, Japan, and beyond, they suggest that identity itself is composed of multiple geographies, materials, and memories. Their luminous blue glaze evokes the “blue dot” on which we all live and spin together, while honoring the enduring role of vessels as objects of offering, preservation, ritual, and transmission. More than ceramic forms, these works reflect on our shared planetary condition and humanity’s continual evolution through care, exchange, repair, and interdependence.
