American designer, educator, and creative technologist Virginia San Fratello works at the intersection of craft, advanced fabrication, environmental research, and activism. Her Phoenix Rising series transforms ash from California wildfires into vessels and architectural screens that address climate change, material resilience, and recovery.

Using 3D printing, San Fratello reconstitutes wildfire waste—the cinders left behind by increasingly frequent and severe fires—into bio-digital materials. The work turns the residue of devastation into objects of reflection and renewal, asking how materials born from loss might become materials for creation.

While wildfires are a natural part of many ecosystems, climate change has intensified their frequency, duration, and scale. As communities increasingly expand into fire-prone landscapes, the risks and impacts continue to grow.

Together, these works create a space for healing and contemplation, prompting urgent questions: How do we rebuild for a safer, more resilient future? Can wildfire waste itself become a building material? How do our choices shape the world around us, and what artifacts help us remember what has been lost?
