SO-COLORED CHAIR

2026 Micro-algae powder, naturally derived resins
Japanese design studio we+ combines research, fieldwork, and material experimentation to explore new relationships between people and the natural world. Their projects investigate overlooked materials and environmental systems, revealing their potential through design.
Part of the ongoing SO-Colored series, this chair is made using a material developed from powdered micro-algae blended with naturally derived resins. Micro-algae are among the oldest life forms on Earth, first appearing approximately 2.7 billion years ago. They have played a crucial role in shaping the planet’s atmosphere by producing oxygen and supporting biodiversity. Today, they are being studied for applications ranging from carbon capture and alternative energy to pharmaceuticals and food production.
SO-Colored explores the remarkable diversity of colors found in micro-algae. While algae are often associated with green, different species can produce vivid reds, yellows, and blues as well. By transforming these naturally occurring pigments into furniture, we+ investigates sustainable alternatives to synthetic color while highlighting the interdependence of human and natural systems. In doing so, the work reveals how even the smallest organisms can hold extraordinary potential, reminding us that nature remains a profound source of knowledge, innovation, and wonder—much of which is still waiting to be discovered.
*SO-Colored is a collaborative development project by we+ and Algal Bio Co., Ltd., utilizing algae powder developed by Algal Bio as a key coloring material.
